Jim and Sharon Roberts decided to go into business in 1974 after their daughter, Michele, was born. Jim had moved nine times in eight years as a manager of Woolworth stores and they wanted to move back to Lancaster County and put down roots. Their first store opened at 18 West Main St., next to the present location, with just a 1,600-square foot sales floor and a one-bay garage. The business now occupies 12,000 square feet and includes five service bays in which thousands of tires and batteries are installed each year and where a wide range of other services are performed.
Through the years, Jim Roberts West Main Auto has evolved. We started as more of a general store with an automotive component and became an automotive supermarket/service center that includes auto parts and accessories.
During that growth, we became one of the top Western Auto Stores in the country. When Western Auto Supply Company closed down that division and stopped supplying goods to us as a wholesale customer, we changed our name from Jim Roberts’ Western Auto.
Michele, Jim and Sharon’s daughter, has spent more than 25 years at the shop and is in charge of the sales floor. Service manager Eric Ross has been with the business for more than 30 years.
